Gut Loving Matcha

I love matcha mid-morning and as I am trying to heal my gut, I decided to make myself a blend that I can use to do double duty. This not only tastes great but helps to repair my gut lining and keep my microbiome happy and thriving.

Prebiotics are a component of some foods that the body cannot digest. They serve as food for bacteria and other beneficial organisms in the gut. Prebiotics may support a healthy gut, offering better digestive health by supporting the probiotic growth of gut bacteria, potentially enhancing digestion and metabolism. They occur naturally in certain foods, like bananas, onions, garlic, leeks, asparagus, artichokes, beans, and whole-grain foods like oatmeal. I tend to eat a good variety and abundance of fruit and vegetables, but adding a little prebiotic fiber once in a while ensures an even greater diversity of food sources for my microbiome.

I also like to sneak in collagen every day as well. I think of it as a powdered bone broth that I can easily add to a latte, a smoothie, or my matcha. Collagen is the most abundant protein in our bodies, it’s found in muscles, bones, skin, blood vessels, digestive system, and tendons. Collagen helps give our skin strength and elasticity, along with replacing dead skin cells. When it comes to our joints and tendons, in simplest terms, it’s the “glue” that helps hold the body together. As we age our body’s collagen production naturally begins to slow down. We can thank this degenerative process for signs of aging, such as wrinkles, sagging skin, and joint pains due to weaker or decreased cartilage.

Since I enjoy a matcha latte, I figured why not snake in a few health benefits into this drink, and luckily the prebiotic fiber has no taste and the collagen makes it even creamier.

Here is the single-serving-recipe:

1 teaspoon matcha I like Blend 94 from Breakaway Matcha or Coldbrew for iced matcha

8-10 oz unsweetened coconut milk (can use any dairy-free milk)

1/2 teaspoon raw honey or maple syrup (optional)

Instructions:

Blend everything in a blender, then heat in a small pot or pour over ice. If you have a Nespresso with a frother you can add the milk and powders to the frother, then pour into a glass and add your honey.

If you want to make a big batch, here is the 12-serving recipe:

4 tablespoons matcha I like Blend 94 from Breakaway Matcha

12 scoops pre-biotic fiber

Store in a glass jar, then mix with coconut milk and honey on-demand.
